The Floyd Story

#JustUs

The Floyd family has faced a barrage of systemic challenges orchestrated by the Calvert Manor Civic Association (CMCA)
and exacerbated by several county agencies.

“Every time the police show up, the Floyds worry. About how their neighbors might view them. About their sense of belonging in the community. About their fate in a country where routine police calls can end with the death of a person who looks like them.

“It makes me feel threatened, like my life could be taken,” Prince Floyd, 53, said.” Read the full article

Local Homeowners Faced with Discrimination in Accokeek, MD

(Accokeek, MD) June 11, 2024 – Prince and Angela Floyd, homeowners in Accokeek, Maryland have been subjected to ongoing discriminatory practices and unwarranted police scrutiny. The Floyd’s moved into their Accokeek forever home in 2020 and have faced a barrage of systemic challenges orchestrated by their neighbors in the Calvert Manor Civic Association (CMCA). Members of the CMCA have filed multiple baseless complaints with various agencies in Prince Georges County asserting that the Floyd’s hold large gatherings at their home that are noisy, unsafe, and unsanitary. None of these complaints have been substantiated.

Upon settling in the neighborhood, the Floyd family was immediately stereotyped and unfairly targeted in the community newsletter published by the CMCA, setting a tone of exclusion and bias that has persisted. Despite adhering to all local ordinances, their residence has been the subject of over 86 police calls during private family gatherings, all of which were found to be within legal noise levels. This harassment escalated with the unilateral installation of “No Parking” signs on their property, allegedly for safety reasons. Yet, no other homes in the area have been subjected to similar treatment.

The Floyd’s have tirelessly sought to address these injustices through appropriate channels, filing multiple Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) requests and engaging with county officials to no avail. It’s crucial that the greater community become aware of this injustice and abuse of power. The Floyd family calls for an immediate and thorough investigation into the actions of the CMCA weaponizing public agencies to interfere with a homeowners right to enjoy the use of their private property.
